Topic 4: Galaxies Day 1: Introduction to Galaxies Study Material: What Are Galaxies? Galaxies are vast and enormous systems in space composed of stars, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter, all held together by gravity. They come in various shapes and sizes. The Milky Way: Our home in the universe is the Milky Way galaxy. It is a barred spiral galaxy, which means it has a central bar-shaped region and spiral arms extending outward. Types of Galaxies: There are three main types of galaxies: Spiral Galaxies: These galaxies have a flat disk-like structure with spiral arms. They often contain young stars, interstellar gas, and dust. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. Elliptical Galaxies: Elliptical galaxies are mostly round or elliptical in shape and consist of older stars. They lack prominent spiral arms. Irregular Galaxies: Irregular galaxies do not have a well-defined shape. They can be chaotic and irregular in appearance, often with a mix of young and old stars. Galactic Struct...
